An unlimited SMS marketing plan would let a business send as many marketing texts as it wants for one flat monthly fee. No U.S. texting platform sells that, because every business text carries a per-message cost from the carriers that deliver it. What you can get is a plan where the price per text keeps dropping as volume grows, with unlimited contacts and free incoming replies.
Key takeaways
- Carriers charge for every business text, so a truly unlimited plan would lose money on its heaviest senders. Look for the cap or fair-use clause in any plan that says “unlimited.”
- On TextSpot’s published plans, the cost per text falls from 5.8 cents at 500 texts a month to 1.6 cents at 25,000.
- Contacts, groups, and incoming replies can be unlimited. Outgoing texts are what you pay for.
Does Unlimited SMS Marketing Exist?
No. If a texting platform advertises unlimited marketing messages, there is a catch somewhere: a monthly cap in the terms, throttled sending speed, a fair-use clause that lets them cut you off, or a plan that only covers replies to people who texted you first.
Who Charges for Each Text
Every text a business sends passes through several companies, and each one charges for it. The platform you use pays a messaging provider, the provider pays the wireless carriers, and U.S. carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile add their own surcharge on business texts. Platforms pass those costs on as a per-message rate.
“For people who are new to sending blast texts, it can be surprising how much more it costs to send a text to, say, 1,000 people than an email. That’s because multiple entities are involved in actually delivering that message, and they all charge a toll: TextSpot, the software; the telecom API providers; and the wireless carriers.”

Why Your Phone Plan Is Unlimited but Business Texting Isn’t
Carriers can sell unlimited texting on personal plans because they know how much a typical person sends in a month and price the plan to cover it. Personal plans also forbid automated or bulk sending in their terms of service.
Business volume is far less predictable. One business sends 300 texts a month and another sends 300,000. A flat price would either overcharge the small sender or lose money on the large one, which is why business texting is priced per message. Sending to hundreds of people at once also needs a registered business number and a platform built for it, like TextSpot’s mass texting.
What “Unlimited” Would Actually Cost
Here is what common monthly volumes cost on TextSpot’s published plans (read from our pricing page on October 20, 2026). Each row uses the cheapest option for that volume, including buying extra credits on a smaller plan when that works out cheaper. One credit sends one standard text.
| Texts per month | Cheapest option | Monthly price | Cost per text | Billed annually, per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | 500-credit plan | $29 | 5.8¢ | $24.17 |
| 1,000 | 1,000-credit plan | $45 | 4.5¢ | $37.50 |
| 2,500 | 2,000-credit plan + 500 extra credits | $95 | 3.8¢ | $80.83 (3,000-credit plan) |
| 5,000 | 5,000-credit plan | $130 | 2.6¢ | $108.33 |
| 10,000 | 10,000-credit plan | $200 | 2.0¢ | $166.67 |
| 25,000 | 25,000-credit plan | $400 | 1.6¢ | $333.33 |
Above 25,000 texts a month, we publish enterprise volume rates. Every account also pays a one-time $19 A2P registration fee, which is a carrier charge to verify your business, not a TextSpot fee.
Message Length Matters More Than the Plan
A text longer than 160 characters is split into segments, and each segment uses a credit. Any image turns the text into an MMS, which uses three. Here is the same send to 5,000 contacts three ways:
| Message | Credits used | Cheapest monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Standard text, under 160 characters | 5,000 | $130 |
| Long text, 2 segments | 10,000 | $200 |
| Text with an image (MMS) | 15,000 | $350 |
One emoji or curly quote can also shrink a segment from 160 characters to 70, which can double the credits on an otherwise short message. Paste your message and list size into the calculator to see the real count before you send.

Paste your message and list size to see how many credits it uses. 1 credit = 1 SMS segment.
Merge fields like {first name} are counted as 10 characters. Picture messages (MMS) are billed differently from SMS.
How to Get Close to Unlimited
You can’t remove the per-text cost, but you can keep it low:
- Pick the plan that matches your real volume. On our plans, the price per extra credit drops from 7 cents to 3 cents as plans get larger, so a heavy sender on a small plan pays more than they need to.
- Pay annually. Annual billing gives two months free, about 17% off.
- Keep every text to one segment. Stay under 160 characters and skip emoji and curly quotes in high-volume sends.
- Clean your list. Texts to numbers that opted out or no longer work still cost credits. Remove them before each campaign.
- Save images for messages that need them. An MMS costs three times a standard text.
What Can Be Unlimited on an SMS Platform
The parts of a texting platform that don’t cost carrier fees can be unlimited. Every TextSpot plan includes:
- Unlimited contacts. Store 100 or one million contacts at the same price. You only pay when you text them.
- Unlimited groups. Organize contacts into as many lists as you like for mass texts.
- Free incoming messages. Replies from your contacts don’t use credits.
- Your own private number and every feature, on every plan.
Extra team members are $10 a month each.
Is SMS Marketing Worth the Per-Message Cost?
A text costs more to send than an email, so it has to earn its place. It does that when the message is short, expected, and needs a quick response: an appointment reminder, a same-day offer, a schedule change, or a reply-to-confirm. Texts also need no design work. You write a clear message and send it.
For long newsletters and anything people read at their desk, email is still cheaper and usually better. The SMS marketing pricing guide and the bulk SMS pricing guide break down costs across providers.
Is There Any Way to Text for Free?
Not for ongoing marketing, but two things help:
- Try before you pay. A TextSpot trial gives you 50 message credits, no credit card required.
- Offset the cost. Our affiliate program pays 30% recurring commission on every business you refer, which can cover your own plan.
For ongoing marketing sends, plan on paying per message.
