A wedding invitation text is an invite sent by SMS instead of by mail. It works best when it fits in one message and includes the date, time, venue, and an easy way to RSVP. Below: when a text invite is fine, what to put in one, and 28 examples you can copy, each one checked to fit in a single text.

Key takeaways

  • Text invites fit casual weddings, small weddings, and short timelines. For a formal wedding, use a text for the save-the-date or the RSVP reminder and mail the invitation.
  • Every invite needs your names, the date, the time, the venue, and an RSVP-by date.
  • Ask for a one-word reply like YES or NO. It’s the easiest answer to give and the easiest to count.

Can You Send Wedding Invitation Texts?

Yes. It’s less traditional than a mailed invitation, so the real question is whether it suits your guests. A text invitation usually works well for:

  • Small, casual, or backyard weddings
  • Courthouse weddings and elopement parties
  • Short engagements, when there isn’t time to print and mail
  • Last-minute additions to the guest list, if your number is already registered

Mail or hand-deliver the invitation for a formal wedding, and for older relatives who may expect one. You can also split it: a text for the save-the-date, a mailed invitation, then texts for the RSVP reminder and day-of updates. For guests who don’t text often, call them too.

What to Include in a Wedding Invitation Text

  1. Your names. Put them first, so the text isn’t mistaken for spam.
  2. The date. Include the day of the week.
  3. The time. The time guests should arrive, or the ceremony start.
  4. The venue. The name, or a link if the address is long.
  5. An RSVP-by date. Without one, you’ll be chasing replies.
  6. One way to reply. “Reply YES or NO” beats “let us know.”
  7. A link for everything else. Dress code, hotels, and registry go on your wedding website, not in the text.

28 Wedding Invitation and RSVP Text Examples

Copy any of these and swap in your details. To check them, we filled each one with sample details (“Olivia Bennett and Marcus Alvarez,” “Saturday, September 19,” “Riverbend Vineyards”), then counted it with the same rules as the calculator in our text blast guide. Every example stayed at or under 160 characters, which is one text, or one segment. The count next to each example is that filled-in length. Longer names, venues, or links may need a small trim. Skip emoji and curly quotes, since either one drops the limit from 160 characters to 70. TextSpot doesn’t add opt-out wording for you, so if your first text needs “Reply STOP to opt out” for carrier registration, type it in. That adds 23 characters, so shorten the venue or date to keep it to one text.

Collect RSVPs by Reply

For a short guest list, texting guests one at a time from your own phone works fine. On a longer list, a one-word reply is easy to send, but you still need somewhere to keep track. With TextSpot, each guest gets a private text instead of a group thread, and every reply comes back to one inbox, so you can see who said yes.

Example invite, reply, and auto-reply. Names are fictional.

Hi Stephanie! Olivia and Marcus are getting married Saturday, September 19 at 4:30 PM, Riverbend Vineyards. Reply YES or NO by August 15.

YES

Thank you! We can’t wait to celebrate with you.

You can also set up a text-to-join keyword so guests can add themselves to your list, or read more about turning texts into RSVPs.

How to Send Wedding Invitation Texts

  1. Sign up for TextSpot. The trial includes 50 message credits, no credit card required, and lets you text up to 10 contacts, so you can test your invite first.
  2. Choose a plan and complete carrier registration, which U.S. carriers require before you text a list.
  3. Upload your guest list with a CSV file.
  4. Create a group, or more than one if you have different invites to send.
  5. Add your guest list to the group.
  6. Go to the dashboard, draft your text, select “To Group,” and select your guest list.
  7. Check your message, then send it right away or schedule it for later.

Everyone in the group gets the message individually. Text only guests who gave you their number. Anyone who replies STOP stops getting your texts. If you’re planning a non-wedding event too, see our text message invitation templates.

What Texting 150 Guests Costs

Say you send each of 150 guests an invitation, an RSVP reminder, and a day-before message. That’s 450 credits (one credit per text), and replies are free. On our published plans, that fits the 500-credit plan at $29 a month. Credits don’t roll over, so if your texts fall in two billing months, you pay for two months. There’s also a one-time $19 carrier registration fee, paid to the carriers, not to TextSpot.

That comes to $48 if every text falls in one billing month, or $77 across two. Postage alone on 150 mailed invitations costs more than that.

All U.S. senders have to register first. You don’t need a business: if you don’t have a tax ID, you can register under the Sole Proprietor path, which is capped at one campaign and low message volume. Plan on five to eight business days for approval, so start at least two weeks before your first text. Read our registration guide for details.

Using Texts for Other Wedding Communication

Once your guests are on a list, you can reach them through the wedding day. See our wedding reminder texts for examples, or use a text to send:

  • Last-minute changes caused by weather
  • Parking details and directions to hard-to-find venues
  • Dress code reminders
  • When happy hour starts and which hashtag to use for photos
  • A thank-you the day after the wedding

You can also ask guests to text song requests ahead of time, then hand the list to your DJ.
